Abacus Founders and Board

Edward A Clark PhD

Dr. Clark is a co-founder, CEO and Lead Scientist for Abacus Bioscience. He has over 40 years experience carrying out basic, human and translational immunology research and has published over 350 papers including two studies recognized as ‘pillars of immunology’: the discovery of the CD40 receptor and the discovery of the molecular basis of T cell co-stimulation through CD80 (B7)-CD28 interactions. He was a co-inventor of CD180 platform technology licensed by Abacus from the University of Washington (UW) and has 7 issued patents. He currently is a Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Immunology at the UW and an Adjunct Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology) at UW. Previously, he helped to found and head the scientific advisory boards (SABs) of two successful, publically traded biotech companies, Genetic Systems (1981) and Trubion Pharmaceuticals (2001). He has served on SABs or as an advisor for biotech and biopharmaceutical companies and as a Chair for international immunology meetings and scientific review panels. His honors include a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health and a Presidential Innovation Fellowship from the UW.

Craig W Philips

Mr. Philips is a co-founder and a board member for Abacus Bioscience.  He has over 30 years of pharmaceutical industry experience at both Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies and smaller biotech companies. He is currently President at Kineta.

Prior to Kineta, Mr. Philips was President at CTI Biopharma a NASDAQ listed clinical and commercial stage oncology company where he led the commercial and clinical activities in the US and EU. Additionally, he led the business development activities and transactions of several clinical and commercial stage programs. Previously, Mr. Philips spent over 20 years with leading biopharmaceutical companies and held strategic and operational leadership roles in the US, Asia, Australia and Europe. He has spent the majority of his career in the clinical and commercial development of oncology and specialty pharmaceuticals including the launch of four new pharmaceutical products which each exceeded $1 billion in sales.

Mr. Philips sits on the board of several private biotech companies, Life Science Washington and is a commercial advisor to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and previously was an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Washington. He received a BSc and an MBA in Business Administration from The Ohio State University.
